PDS Field Tests Successful

8/19/2000

The first Parametric Diagnostics Subsystem (PDS) - a new product developed by Compressor Controls - CIS/EE Division and R&D, has successfully passed field tests at a Gazprom compressor station "Ordynskaya” with the “Ural” GPA-12R turbocompressor.

A special Gazprom acceptance commission comprised of gas transmission enterprises managers and leading engineers, OEMs representatives, and experts from scientific research institutes recommended the Parametric Diagnostics Subsystem (PDS) for industrial implementation. The acceptance commission also suggested including PDS as optional equipment for CCC control systems for all “Ural” turbocompressors used in Russian natural gas pipeline compressor stations.

The Parametric Diagnostics Subsystem (PDS) is an automatic system that performs the diagnostics of gas turbine driven compressors and their auxiliary equipment’s current conditions, and predicts changes. These functions are supported entirely by the CCC TrainView software. No additional equipment is necessary.

The Parametric Diagnostics Subsystem is an integral part of a CCC control system. The data from the performance analysis and the predicted changes in the equipment conditions is displayed on the operator interface station’s screen. This allows for the timely detection of equipment failures and deficiencies, which, in turn, leads to more precise scheduling of equipment maintenance and/or overhauls while saving customer's time and money.

CCC & Reliance Petroleum: Collaborators in Largest Refinery in India

6/15/2000

Compressor Controls Corporation has recently commissioned an integrated turbomachinery control system, for a never-before attempted parallel, Power Recovery Train (PRT) installation for Reliance Petroleum Ltd. (RPL), a subsidiary of Reliance Group. CCC’s duplex, fault tolerant, Series 4 system controls the PRT turbomachinery of the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) at the refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. The refinery is the largest grassroots operation in India. Each PRT consists of an axial air blower (providing air to the FCC process), a steam turbine, a motor/generator and an expander - all connected to the same shaft. The machinery train recovers energy from the process by running the hot high-pressure gas through an expander.

CCC’s prior experience and expertise in PRT control systems, FCCU, and field support played crucial roles in securing the project. CCC's involvement with this project began approximately 3-years prior to the start-up of this facility. Subsequently, intense engineering and design-review meetings followed over the next year resulting in an informal collaboration between the UOP, Bechtel, Reliance, and CCC engineers to design a control system for the FCCU’s most complex and highly-critical machinery trains. RPL also purchased from CCC additional control systems for FCC wet gas, coker gas, and feed gas compression units.

The result of this technical collaboration was the installation and commissioning of a duplex, fault tolerant, Series 4 control system from CCC that provides automatic control during all modes of operation including start-up and shutdown, single and parallel operation, and operation both on and off the utility grid. Advanced feedforward control algorithms are implemented to ensure that negative control loop interaction is minimized, as well as to ensure high-speed adaptation to sudden mode switches caused by any component trip or loss of connection to the utility bus.

To ensure the project’s success, the Series 4 PRT control system underwent a rigorous closed loop testing using a computer simulation of the actual FCCU process. Reliance, UOP and Bechtel witnessed the factory acceptance tests, which were conducted before the equipment was shipped to the site. CCC delivered and installed the Series 4 system on time and without incident, followed by extensive validation of the control system in the field.

The RPL facility is the largest state-of-the-art refinery in India. The installation of a PRT system adds to other attempts refinery-wide to achieve the lowest capital and operating costs per ton.
