CCC at the 15th Annual Joint ISAPOWID/EPRI Control and Instrumentation Conference
June 16, 2005

For 15 years, ISA - the Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society; and the Electric Power Research Institute have jointly sponsored this conference which brings together industry professionals to share power generation I&C breakthroughs and experiences. The conference has been successful because it provides the right mix of current practices, new methods and lessons learned.
Compressor Controls Corporation (CCC) presented accumulated research, development and implementation experience with its New All-Digital Electro-Mechanical Steam Turbine Control (DEMC) System.
A typical modern steam turbine’s digital electro hydraulic control system (DEHC) consists of a microprocessor controller and an electro-hydraulic transducer (EHT). While the advantages of such system are well known, its performance is affected by the weaknesses typical of hydraulic controls. The reason for this is the hydraulic EHT. This paper shows how a new digital electro-mechanical control (DEMC) system, with digital electro-mechanical positioning of the pilot valve instead of its traditional EHT actuation, was created and implemented. Different technical and application aspects of the DEMC system are also presented.

Pump Control Strategies Benefit from Compressor Know-How
March 9, 2005

Operating pumps in parallel is not without risk. Parallel operation takes on added importance whenever high-pressure pumps are involved. In fact, some users have serious pump failures on their first installation with perhaps only two pumps operating in parallel. Indeed, some users actually expect problems controlling parallel operation of multiple pumps. This is where centrifugal compressor control strategies and related know-how should come into play. For many years, competent manufacturers and providers of surge abatement devices have implemented these strategies with great success in compressors. The pump projects recently analyzed by at least one company lead to the conclusion that the related know-how can easily be applied to pumps and will resolve design challenges. The February 2005 issue of Hydrocarbon Processing magazine featured an article authored by Saul Mirsky, CCC’s Senior Vice President of Technology.
